Yuliya Musakovska is a Ukrainian poet, writer, and translator. She was born on July 9, 1982, in Lviv, Ukraine. She is the author of six poetry collections in Ukrainian. Her book The God of Freedom [Бог свободи] (2021) was shortlisted for the Lviv UNESCO City of Literature Prize and nominated for the Shevchenko National Prize, Ukraine’s highest literary honor. In 2024, The God of Freedom was published in English by Arrowsmith Press, in translation by Olena Jennings and the author. The collection was named one of the 10 best Ukraine-related books by The Kyiv Independent. Her latest collection, Stones and Nails (2024), captures how the poet’s voice breaks through numbness to record and process the unimaginable realities of war. Musakovska has received numerous literary honors in Ukraine, including the prestigious Smoloskyp Prize for Poetry (2010) and the Dictum Prize (2013). Her work has been translated into over thirty languages and published internationally, with individual collections appearing in the U.S., Sweden, and Poland. As a translator, she works with English and Swedish, with a current focus on poetry by Ukrainian soldiers. She has translated the poetry of Tomas Tranströmer into Ukrainian, and, in 2024, published her translation of Ukrainian soldier poet Artur Dron’s full-length collection, We Were Here [Тут були ми] with Jantar Publishing. In 2023, Musakovska paused her two-decade career in IT and international business to devote herself fully to literary work and cultural advocacy for Ukraine. She is a member of PEN Ukraine.
